Major in Mathematics - Effective Fall, 2010
Passing ten courses in mathematics is required of all majors. These ten courses must include
- MA 141 Calculus I or MA 151 Calculus for Biology - 4 semester hours
- MA 142 Calculus II - 4 semester hours
- MA 241 Calculus III - 4 semester hours
- MA 301 Introduction to Advanced Mathematics - 2 semester hours
- MA 322 Linear Algebra - 3 semester hours
- MA 411 Abstract Algebra I - 4 semester hours
- MA 441 Advanced Calculus I - 4 semester hours
- one course chosen from
- MA 335 Differential Equations - 3 semester hours
- MA/PH 345 Methods of Mathematical Physics - 3 semester hours
- MA 351 Numerical Analysis - 3 semester hours
- MA 362 Discrete Mathematics - 3 semester hours
- MA 405 Mathematical Statistics I - 3 semester hours
- one course chosen from
- MA 399 Special Topics - 3 credit hours
- MA 406 Mathematical Statistics II - 3 semester hours
- MA 412 Abstract Algebra II* - 3 semester hours
- MA 440 Complex Analysis* - 3 semester hours
- MA 442 Advanced Calculus II* - 3 semester hours
- MA 470 Introduction to Topology* - 3 semester hours
- one Senior Culminating Experience course chosen from
- MA 400 College Geometry - 4 semester hours (required for Secondary Education students)
- MA 460 Senior Culminating Experience - 3 semester hours
* These courses are recommended for students interested in graduate studies in mathematics.
Students interested in teaching high school mathematics must pass MA 395 in place of AE 335. These students should consult their advisors and the Guide to Teacher Certification Programs of the Education Department for specific course requirements.
