Awards


Lydia Bell wins 2004 Chemistry Alumni Award

The department offers a variety of scholarships and awards for its majors. These awards are typically given in the spring, either at the awards convocation (noted with an *) or at a departmental picnic.

SENIOR

*American Institute of Chemists Award
Annual student award to honor outstanding seniors majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering, or biochemistry. Such awards are given in recognition of demonstrated record of ability, leadership, and professional promise. Candidates are chosen and nominated by their faculty members. Prize includes a certificate (+frame), 1yr. Student Associate membership, peer-reviewed journal, plus other AIC member services.

*The Tomsich Outstanding Junior or Senior Prize in Natural Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science - Nominee
Given to a junior or senior majoring in one of the natural sciences, mathematics or computer science department. Each participating department chair is to nominate one student, and submit the nomination with a transcript and letter of support. The nominees are then ranked by the participating department chairs and Dean of the College.

JUNIOR

*Chemistry Alumni Scholarship (applied to tuition)
Awarded to that junior chosen as the most outstanding chemistry major. Prize is set by the Chemistry Department (currently $1000 non-replacement dollars) from endowed fund. It must be applied toward the tuition of the student for the following year.

JUNIOR/SOPHOMORE


Ken Hovis wins the 2004 Bertha Tsai Memorial Award

Akron ACS Outstanding Junior (usually) or Sophomore
Awarded to an outstanding junior chemistry or biochemistry major. Prize is a book.

Akron ACS - ACCESS Award
Rotating award among regional institutions. One of our students is eligible every three years. Last awarded in April 2002, $500 check.

*Bertha Tsai Memorial Award
Presented annually to a sophomore or junior student who has performed outstanding work in the field of chemistry. Prize is currently $500 from endowed fund.

SOPHOMORE

POLYED (Polymer Education Committee of the ACS) Undergraduate Award for Achievement in Organic Chemistry
Awarded to a chemistry or chemical engineering major who will or have completed their second semester of organic chemistry during the current academic year. Method of selection is left to the department. Suggested criteria include a major whose future career plans include a career in chemistry, a GPA of at least 3.4, and outstanding performance in a two semester organic sequence. Award consists of a certificate (+frame) and a souvenir gift (when available from POLYED).

FRESHMAN

CRC Press Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award
Presented annually to the outstanding chemistry or biochemistry major in freshman chemistry. Award is a CRC Handbook of chemistry and Physics.

NOT SPECIFIC TO CLASS

*The Louis A. Pappenhagen Prize
Prize granted to a student deemed by the chemistry faculty as having shown outstanding capability in the area of analytical chemistry. Instituted by the Alembroic Society as a memorial to Dr. Louis A. Pappenhagen in memory of his service to the Chemistry Department. Prize usually consists of a certificate of merit (+frame) and an appropriate book provided by the Chemistry Department.

The John M. and Mary W. Nolan Scholarship
This scholarship should be awarded annually to a science major, with preference given to a chemistry major. Preference should be given to a working student paying all or part of costs to attend Mount Union College. The recipient of this award shall be determined by the Director of Financial Services and a representative of the Department of Chemistry. Established in 2000 by John B. Nolan, son of John M. and Mary W. Nolan. Award is currently $500 applied to tuition (replacement dollars).

NOT MATURED

The Larry M. Ludwick Scholarship
This scholarship is to be awarded to a chemistry major. Financial need should be considered as well. Established in 1999 through a bequest from the estate of Larry M. Ludwick. Will become active once the balance has reached predetermined amount.
